This is the barque Europa it was built by the deutch in 1894 and was built for the nitrate trade. Europa is one of the few last surviving cape horner travellers. Cape horn is in the lowest point of south america and was the most dangerous route to be taken by ships. Many ships that were part of the nitrate trade were sunk because of the weather in cape horn. Europa was one of the few that was able to cross and survive the rigerous weather of the horn. Europa has been refitted multiple times from a fully-rigged ship to a barque, to this day she remains to be a barque(square sails on the foremast and the mast and has fore and aft sails on the mizzen mast). Today Europa is still in service and her purpose is sail training in the antartic and the oceans.
